Ammania gracilis or elegant ammania is one of the most common aquarium plants, both among beginner aquarists and professional ones. This is an elegant and beautiful plant that does not require special conditions of detention, but even so, it’s quite difficult to find it on sale, except in specialized stores or with the same aquarium lovers.
Graceful Ammania was brought from Liberia by Bassink P.J. Which he presented at the corresponding exhibition. In nature, the plant can be found in Africa, prefers to grow around rivers, in swamps and small streams.
Ammania is a bright, long-stemmed plant, and subject to certain requirements, it grows rapidly rapidly growing to the edge of the aquarium. Given the size, the plant is not recommended for cultivation in small and even medium aquariums (less than 50 liters). Since it can grow to a height of up to 70 cm. On a long stem, wavy leaves grow crosswise, which can be in or above water. But those that grow in the water are wider and elongated. The color of the leaves can vary from pale green to reddish brown. This factor is influenced by the conditions of detention. If the plant does not have enough light, the growth will be very slow, and the lower leaves will begin to fall off, while the rest will be pale and sick.
Maintenance and care
If you want to get a really beautiful and healthy ammania gracilis, you still have to create certain conditions, even though this aquarium plant is moderately demanding.
It is best that the lighting is intense, at least 1 W per liter, but this does not mean that with average lighting, ammonia will die, it simply will not be able to reveal all its beauty. In addition, a regular supply of CO2 is needed. He likes water of medium softness, with an acidity level of 4 to 6 and a GH of 6 to 8, but he will also be able to take root in other conditions. The optimum water temperature should be from 23 to 280FROM.
In addition, it is necessary to carry out regular feeding with micronutrients, which must necessarily include phosphate and nitrogen. Moreover, the latter should be abundant, and only then can the maximum result be achieved. Other fertilizers are also required, which will include iron. The color of the leaves will depend on this, otherwise the leaves will become pale pink.
With a high level of nitrogen in the leaves and stem, green will prevail. It will be best if the nitrogen content is low, and there are a lot of other trace elements.
For this, you can use not only liquid fertilizers, but also in the form of tablets, which must be adjusted to the root system of ammonia.
Additionally, you need to take care of the soil, which will also contain nutrients and iron. Ideal may be the soil of hell amazonia, but it is quite expensive because it contains macro and micro elements. Therefore, especially for large aquariums it will be costly. But how were you not like that, and small gravel is needed in any case, the layer of which should be from 3 to 4 cm.
Periodically it will be necessary to carry out pruning. The extra lateral processes and apex are usually cut off if it has grown long enough. New plants can be grown from cut shoots, for this they just need to be planted in the ground and within a few weeks they will have roots. Ammania can also propagate by seed, but it will not be easy to do this in an aquarium. Given the active growth of the plant, it can be used as natural shading in an aquarium.
