The representative of the most ancient class of ray-finned fish, living exclusively in fresh water, Arovan belongs to the order of Aravanobrazovye. The homeland of these fish is South America, Asia and Australia, where they live up to 50 years and reach one and a half meters. Aquarium species, as a rule, grow to 60-70 cm.
Just keeping these fish is easy. It is quite enough to get a spacious, 400 liter, aquarium with slightly acidic or neutral water at a temperature of 24-28 degrees. It is important not to forget to change a quarter of the volume of water weekly, even with good aeration and filtration.
Maintenance and care
Ancient predators prefer live food: small fish, insects from the surface of the water or slices of lean meat, which they take directly from the hands of the owner, which they recognize among other people. It is important to remember that these fish tend to jump out of the aquarium!
It is difficult to breed Arovan mainly because the pair needs a large space - at least 600 liters. Otherwise, everything is simple: after spawning, the female hatches eggs in her mouth for 40 days, after which fairly large, about 2.5-3 cm, fry appear.
