Ophthalmic macrognathus is a rare representative of aquariums of the genus proboscis.
Fishes of brown, golden and even dark green shades in the tail are dark spots reminiscent of the eyes. They have a long, elongated body, similar to an eel, a small head with a sharp proboscis.
Individuals grow to 20 - 25 cm.
In nutrition, these fish prefer live food: bloodworms, tubule. You can give thawed shrimp slices. They practically do not eat dry food, only if it falls to the bottom, the fish can eat it there. With insufficient feed, this predator can attack smaller fish.
Maintenance and care
For macrognatus, an aquarium content of between 80 and 100 liters is preferred. Mandatory aeration and water change a third of 1 time per week. Water temperature is from + 25 ° С to 28 ° С. Macrognatus can jump out of the water, so the lid of the aquarium should always be closed. Coarse sand is required at the bottom, otherwise fish of this genus may become ill. They love to housekeep in the ground, so it is better to choose pebbles and other bottom decor without sharp corners. Contain with fish of equal size. Macrognatuses are usually active in the evening and at night.
Fish become sexually mature after a year. During the spawning period, the fish are not bothered, the aquarium is shaded. Kids quickly learn and grow.
