Freshwater predatory fish-slider or pineapple belongs to the order Perch, suborder Labyrinth, family Anabatida, genus Anabasy. The natural habitat is Southeast Asia: India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines, China and Malaysia. They prefer slow-flowing bodies of water or standing fresh or slightly brackish waters of silty ponds, ditches, lakes overgrown with grass. They have gill mazes, so they breathe atmospheric air. The fish was first brought to Russia in 1960.
Under natural conditions, pineapple can reach 25 centimeters in length, in an aquarium - up to 16 centimeters. The elongated body has a direct profile of the back and abdomen, a large head, terminal large mouth, well-developed powerful pectoral and anal fins, with the help of which the fish is able to move on land. Because of this feature, she got her name "Crawler Fish." The edges of the gill covers are covered with numerous spikes.
Anabas is usually painted in gray-green or gray-brown, sometimes orange individuals are also found. On the sides there are from 8 to 10 stripes running across the body, during spawning they become brighter. Reddish or orange fins. One can distinguish a female from a male by a fuller abdomen and pale coloration.
Thanks to powerful fins and gill covers equipped with spikes, and pushing off the tail, the pineapple moves on land, crawls over small obstacles and even climbs trees in search of food. Fish are taken out of the water at night, on land they can spend up to several days under the condition of significant air humidity, breaking about 100 meters.
Slider fish has a pugnacious and, at the same time, shy disposition, is most active in the evening and at night. Adult individuals do not get along well with each other and with neighbors of other species.
In nature, pineapple prefers to eat live food, for example, worms, small fish, and various invertebrates. Living in an aquarium, a slider fish can eat anything that is offered to it. This can be a finely chopped piece of raw meat, egg yolk, fresh lettuce, boiled rice or buckwheat, special dry food for fish.
Maintenance and care
A species aquarium for keeping pineapples must have a volume of at least hundreds of liters, the cover glass must be tightly attached at a distance of 10 centimeters from the surface of the water, otherwise the fish may hit it by jumping out of a breath of air. The light should be diffused and subdued. In the aquarium, it is necessary to place various shelters. It can be driftwood, artificial grottoes, thickets of floating plants. Water should be regularly filtered and saturated with oxygen, its temperature should not exceed 27 degrees, at least 20% of the volume of water should be replaced weekly with fresh. Pebbles and fine gravel are ideal for the soil.
At the age of one and a half years, pineapple is already able to acquire offspring. For spawning, producers should be placed in a separate species aquarium or spawning tank, the volume of which should be 200 liters, while the water temperature must be kept at 30 degrees. Water should always be fresh. The female at one time sweeps about 5 thousand colorless eggs, which rise to the surface and swim freely there. Spawning occurs closer to the ground or in the middle layer of water. After its completion, it is better for the producers to plant it, although they do not touch offspring. During the day, at a water temperature of 24 degrees, eggs will hatch, and after 2 days they will be able to swim and eat starter food, which uses live dust, rotifers.
